How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 1

Have you clicked on one of those travel wardrobe sites only to find the clothes are frumpy and not very fashion forward?   Just because we are over 50; doesn't mean we want to look like we just left the gym while vacationing.  We want to look our best but still be comfortable.  Is that possible?

Are any of you planning a trip this Spring?  Packing, knowing what to take, and more importantly (what not to take) can be a challenge with today's travel.  No one wants to pay extra to drag an extra suitcase on the plane.  The Huffington Post has some great tips on how to pack here.  Eagle Creek is a great resource for travel products ,and they have the best checklist for travel I have found here.

Now that you know how to pack the question is what to pack?  Travel wardrobes need to be small light and portable.  The days of lugging multiple suitcases are over. Packing needs to be taken seriously.  All pieces need to work together to create multiple outfits.

It is important to have a few pieces that we will call "Key Players". They need to have the ability to be worn several times numerous ways.  Here are some of my favorites.

1.Dream Leggings/Artful Home 2. Blondo Victorina Boots 3. Madewell High Rise Jeans 4. Baggalini Crossbody Travel Bag 5. Clarks Grayson Ballet Flat 6. Ecco Chase Sneaker 7.LM Tech rotaating IPad case 8. Gap Girlfriend Jeans l 9.J Crew Factory Sunglasses 10. Rain/Sun hat Debra Weitzner 11. Surplice Dress/Artful Home 12. Ponte Compression Pants/Ivanka Trump 13. J Crew Icon Trench 14. Sassy Cowl Jacket/Artful Home

A few of these pieces I consider "Wardrobe Opportunists".  They can be worn several ways with different pieces.
#10 This hat from Debra Weitzner is waterproof on one side (black) and the tan side is a sun hat. It is packable and crushable.  How great is that?  I need to buy one of these.
#2 Victorina Boots from Blondo.  I own these.  They come in wide widths and they are waterproof and comfortable!
#14 The Sassy Cowl Jacket by FH Clothing from Artful Home has all of the attributes of a great travel piece, and is the hub of this travel capsule.  It is a mix of rayon, spandex, and nylon; so it is wrinkle free, and holds it shape. It tapers in at the waist and then flairs out at the hip.  It can be worn as is with the cowl un-zipped, or zipped all the way up for extra warmth with a scarf added.  It can be unzipped as an extra layer over the Surplice dress and worn with boots. It can also be worn as shown below with a skirt and or leggings and sneakers for a more casual look.

On Monday I will list my "Supporting Cast" (scarves, jewelry, and shirts) and show you ways to create multiple outfits.

  1. I so need this advice. I am a terrible packer - always take far too much stuff which I end up not wearing and promise myself next time I'll pack light but fail every time! Xx Sharon

  2. I love this and I can tell you this advice is not just for over 50's, I feel this is appropriate to anyone in their 40's too! Simple packing and a careful choice of outfits. Now tell me, now that you have the packing perfected, where are you off to on your travel!??

    1. I agree Elizabeth but I have to tell you when we went to Italy a couple of years ago in March I took boots (as it was snowed in when we left) a pair of flats and a pair of flip flops for the shower. It ended up in the 70's so I wore my flip flops most of the time!!

  5. I'm the odd girl out. With so many people picking bags that barely fit bins and then cramming them to the limit and then trying to squash them into any available (and shrinking space), we check our bags. My husband is 6'5" and almost 70. I have had some rather hideous rotator cuff issues. I don't want to re-injure my shoulder trying to heave my bag in the carry on space. We try to fly premium economy (an oxymoron for sure) where you get two free checked bags and my husband can stretch out his old long legs!

As a 67 year old boomer, I no longer pack jeans. They take up too much room and there are pants out there that are more comfortable and could be washed and air dried if needed. Love Artful Home. I also like Soft Surroundings for tunics, jackets and leggings. My plan is always a black "core" outfit—tunics/leggings, tunics/long skirts and then have fun with lightweight jackets. No matter the season, layers are the ticket!

    1. Such good advice! I am 62 and still love my jeans. They do take up the space however. Before I had my hip replace I had the same issue and now I need the other replaced so I understand your suitcase issue! My son in law is 6'8 so he can commisserate with your husband regarding travel!!

  6. I travel a great deal and am always looking for great travel clothing. I wasn't aware of several of your great resources so thanks very much! My biggest problem is paring down and my husband loves to complain that I always pack too much. But I do try to pick a color theme as you suggest which helps a great deal. Perhaps your great post will help inspire me to be more selective. In fact, I'm packing for a trip to Denver as we speak so I'll try to heed your good advice.

    1. It has taken me years to become a good packer and I still pack too much on shorter trips! It is a struggle for all of us!

  7. I almost never travel, but have a trip coming up in a few weeks. I have all of these pieces now set aside, (except I'm going bootie with the skinny jeans instead of my tall boots - trip is to Scotsdale) and look forward to Monday's post to round out my bag!
