The Power of Pinterest….The Look for Less

For those of us that blog Pinterest has become a powerful tool for many reasons. Of course it is a great place to organize and store images for future blog posts .It also has become a handy tool that shows us which posts or images are most popular with our readership.   Many of you may remember awhile back I did a post about the power of black and white here http://roughluxeperspective.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2012-09-04T09:06:00-07:00&max-results=2 . This beautiful beach house bedroom by Amelia Handegan that appeared in Architectural Digest (http://www.architecturaldigest.com/decor/2011-07/amelia-handegan-south-carolina-beach-bungalow-slideshow#slide=1) has literally been pinned to death.

I have been a fan for a long time and have great respect for her ability to combine differing styles & periods, while infusing different cultures in her designs as well.  Her work has been featured in numerous publications and she has consistently been named among the nations top designers. To see more of her work go here  http://www.athid.com/.

Many of us cannot afford to have Amelia Handegan design our beach house or even our bedroom for that matter.  I thought it would be fun to try to get a similar look for less.

Anyone that reads my blog knows what we can begin with the good old IKEA Stockholm rug.  I am pretty sure the one Amelia used is an antique Dhurrie or Kilim but IKEA will have to do! At $299 it is hard to beat.

Ebay has a large selection of Jaipuri Quilts from India.  This one is $43.95

Saffron & Marigold has this pillow sham for $29.99

They also have the matching duvet if you prefer a more matchy matchy look.  I would mix it up if it were mine.

Pottery Barn has the twin Hanna Quilt on sale for $119.  I have found nice quilts at Marshalls for under $50 as well.

The one splurge piece I would have in the room would be something like this Antique Chinese Wine Table. The prices on these run the gamut.  I have seen them really reasonable or quite pricey.  Ebay has a reproduction for $295.00 but I really feel strongly that you need to mix the high and low to achieve the right look.  If everything is “new” your room will look like a catalogue page.

Ballard Designs has this great little ottoman for $99.It would look great under the wine table.   I have used these in twos numerous times for clients under console tables.

Ebay has this great pair of alabaster lamps with a starting bid of $79.00 that would be gorgeous with some interesting lamp shades on the table above.

There are numerous block printed fabrics available at reasonable prices that you could construct the corona out of.  Here is one I found on etsy for $6.50 a yard

Hand block printed cotton fabric

Amelia placed a lovely vintage shell painting above the mirror to complete the look. Antique or vintage twin bedsteads can be found in your local antique store or flea market. Paint them black and you have a similar look.

What do you think about her design for this beach house bedroom? Why do you think it has captured the imagination of so many?
