Once again Maryann and I are so excited to bring you another talented group of bloggers willing to share their tips on how to create a beautiful bed. For those of you knew to the series welcome!
Ideally your master bedroom should be a calm soothing retreat from the stress and pressure of everyday life. It should be the one place where you can unwind, relax and recharge. Opt for pretty details, luxurious linens, fluffy comforters, adequate lighting and soothing scents that will make your bedroom feel like a haven. Here are my tips to create a spa like master bedroom.
#1 Pretty Pillow Shams or Decorative Pillows The monogrammed shams were made by Trish from Cottage by Design. The long pillow by Yvonne from Soft Accents. The fabric is Brunschwig & Fil Le Zebre.
#2 Wonderful Sheets
Sheets are like sunscreen spending money on sheets that have more than a 400 thread count is unnecessary. Focus on the fabric the sheets are made of. Combed cotton, Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton are the best choices. Read the labels closely. If you like soft sheets, choose a sateen but if you prefer crisp sheets, try percale. I personally like mine crisp. “Now you see 1,000 thread count sheets but you just can’t get that many threads on a loom,” says Pat Slaven, a textile expert at Consumer Reports.
To get that higher number, manufacturers use thinner strands of fabric twisted together as if they were one. Then they double, triple or even quadruple the thread count to make the number more attractive to the consumer. “It ups the count but doesn’t give you a better sheet,” says Slaven. “The sweet spot is 400.”
#3 Linen Spray and/or Candles
I love linens that smell as if they are line dried. Lavender is a great scent for sheets. Blythe and Bonny Lavender or Grapefruit are my personal favorites. You can buy the calendars and room spray at Nordstrom online.
#4 A Fluffy Comforter We use a lightweight down blanket (in between two sheets) year round. Incidentally Ikea makes a great one. I like to have a comforter rolled at the end of a bed for chillier nights in the winter.I prefer a quilt on the bed In the summer I leave it off.
#5 Fresh Flowers or Greens Seasonal blooms add another layer of freshness to the space.
#6 Great Pillows
Buy the best pillows you can afford and they will last for years. A good friend bought both of our children nice pillows for wedding gifts and a pair for us as a thank you. We have had ours for over 10 years. They are expensive but you get a lot of bang for the buck (http://www.garnethill.com/garnet-hill-signature-white-goose-down-pillow/344926?&defattribvalue=main)
#7 A Bed Skirt Tailor Made for your Bed
I have ready made bed skirts at our lake house. There are pretty good ones on the market but they never fit like a custom made one. If you don’t change out your bedding all the time, I would consider custom made. I encourage my clients to keep them neutral so they can change out the quilt or comforter more reasonably than the bed skirt.
#8 An Ample Sized Table to Stash Whatever Needed Bedside
This table is an antique tavern table that can double as a desk. If you have the space big is always better!
#9 Matching Lamps
I prefer matching lamps next to a bed. I don’t necessarily like matched bedside tables but I like the lamps to be consistent. These lamps were handmade in Mexico many years ago. The shades are mica from Pottery Barn.
#10 A Cute Yellow Lab
to keep you warm on cold nights (and to make sure your bed is messed up at all times)

DeleteCindy thank you for talking about thread count.....I really started to feel duped when I bought our extra set of sheets that were only 300 thread count and they turned out to be so soft and luxurious feeling, and the 800 thread count ones aren't nearly as comfy! Your bed is gorgeous, particularly that last photo of it with that lovely fur throw on top! :) Thanks so much for this series, it was so fun to participate in and I have enjoyed it all along!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa we so enjoyed having you!! You know I love those IKEA lamps you did!!
DeleteSuch a pretty bedroom, I especially love tip #10. We all need a furry companion to put the finishing touches on any room. :-)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.
xo,
Karen
Karen you are so right...the furry companion is the best part! Even if he does get up to early!!
DeleteWhat a fun series! I popped over from La Contessa's (boudoir)... I adore the dog, I love seeing the antiques and accessories, and to me, fresh flowers in the home are a must -- for their scent as much as anything else.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that good pillows are essential, though it's fascinating how different our tastes can be in what we find comfortable.
Lovely bedroom! (I suppose I ought to neaten mine... This series is reminding me I really should...)
xo
D.A...my bedroom looks more like the Contessa's most of the time. That is why I love her so much!!
DeleteYour bedroom looks so pretty..love your leopard pillow with the blue trim..I'm going to have to try the lavender spray!
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie I really love that pillow as well. Le Zebre is one of B&F's fabrics that they revived...I love it!!
DeleteBeautiful Cindy, so cozy and fluffy! Several of you ladies have mentioned lavender, I'm putting it on my list! :) I always love this fun series!
ReplyDeletePam you are such a sweetie! I adore that bedroom that you did for the OrC. I still think about that!!
DeleteI love all your tips Cindy but I need to modify #10. How about a slightly nervous but very lovable German Shepherd instead? hahaha your fur baby looks so comfy on that bed. So glad to see a new series going on!
ReplyDeleteWell you do know that Beau is slightly rambunctious and is never allowed on that comforter!! Most of the time our bed is made only with sheets thanks to Mr B
DeleteI love your sheet advice - buying great sheets is so hard because the most expensive ones are necessarily the best! And I love the idea of spraying my sheets with a lavender scent - honestly, I'd never thought of it! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI have to confess some of the best sheets I ever bought were on black friday right after we bought the lake house. They came from Kohls!! I have never been able to find them again however...
ReplyDeletehi Cindy,
ReplyDeleteOh the bedroom, peaceful, tranquil, and a place to rest your day's end on.
Love a great mattress, and great bed sheets, I have tried many brands, and one day I was I. A desperate pinch for a set of shees and grabbed a good pair of field crest at Target and to my surprise I sleep like I was in designer Egpytion cotton 1300 thread count, try them I really thing you will be surprised.
This bedroom looks amazing.
Lover every comforting aspect of it.
Xx
Dore
Dore so funny you mentioned that. We bought sheets for our lakehouse at Target on a black friday sale and they were the best I have had in a long time! Did you get them recently?
