Friday Fun Stuff Tips for Going Gray

On the heels of the unexpected interest in my post about decorating for the over 55 set I decided to do a post on going gray since so many of you have emailed me about it .  To be honest I was reluctant to post about it as I know it is not for everyone.  I do not want to be the torch bearer for gray hair.  For me it worked, I am happy I did it and I have never regretted it for one second.

It has to be your decision.  It is helpful if your husband and your family are supportive (mine were). Don’t  let your hairdresser tell you that your hair will not be a “pretty gray”. If she does find a new one! I had multiple hair stylists tell me that.  When I went back to my original hairdresser she supported me. I was having to color my hair so often my hair began to look something like this…seriously

Here are my three tips if you want to go gray
  • Go shorter
  • Go lighter   Ease into it by going lighter first. This  lessens the mark between regrowth and the color that is being applied to your hair.
  • Add lowlights  Instead of doing a full base color, start doing lowlights (instead of coloring all of the hair, repigment your base color in strands).
Once you have made it through the above process remember going gray is not your ticket to low maintenance hair.  Gray hair is dryer, coarser, more brittle, and frizzier than normal hair. Sun, minerals in your water and other environmental factors can cause your hair to yellow.

My Tips for Caring for your Gray Hair

     * Use a “blue shampoo” at least once a week
     * Have your stylist do a gloss when you get your haircut (if you can afford it)
     * Deep Condition or Use a Really Good Conditioner
     * Use a  Product to Combat the Frizz
     * Use a Clarifying Shampoo Once a Week
     * Keep Your Style Current

Here are my favorite products that work for me.  I am not endorsing any of these products for everyone.  There are many out there and you will need to find out which ones work best for you.

Favorite Products for Healthy Gray Hair

My two favorite shampoos are Phytargent Whitening (this is my personal favorite), and Aveda Blue Malva Shampoo.

Phyto Phytargent Whitening 6.7-ounce Shampoo

I personally don't care for the Aveda conditioner.  Until recently I had not found a conditioner I liked. Now I am a huge fan of Davines Alchemic Silver Conditioner.  It is pricey but it is wonderful!

Davines Alchemic Silver Conditioner 8.45 oz. Conditoner Unisex
The best combination I have found to combat frizz is the original Moroccan Oil (just a couple of drops) after washing and before drying.  Add to that a couple tiny pumps of  the Original Frizz Ease from John Frieda (I find the extra strength do be too much) . I have tried more expensive products and find this to be the best.  Be super careful not to get too much or your hair will become greasy.

Once you have made the leap you need to be careful not to look like a grandma.  Make sure you have a current cut and you will need to adjust your makeup.  I find that I need my lipstick and blush to have a little more color   Since I have gone silver fuschia is one of my new best friends.  I could never wear white before and white is absolutely the best color for gray hair as well as aging skin! One of the best perks is you can dress a little more hip without looking like you are trying to be your daughter.

I hope this helps.  I am going to try and do a fashion/beauty post every other friday. Are any of you thinking about going gray?  I would love to hear about it!

  1. The Blog "That's Not My Age" Had an image of a woman yesterday who had great dark gray hair I loved it! I just starting to go gray and my hair just keeps getting lighter to cover it. I will have to surrender one day and follow your advice here!

    1. Karolyn your hair will probably not look any different when you go gray. A friend of mine has platinum blonde hair. She was always insulted when people thought it was gray...she quit coloring it and it was the same color!

  2. I think you always look stunning with your gorgeous hair and hip style, Cindy! I'm not there yet with the gray, but have a teenager about to drive so I'm sure it's only a matter of time! :) Looking forward to your posts.

  4. You are playing my song! I am at the color every 3 to 4 weeks right now, very dark brown hair. I have done the low lights a couple times but eventually go back to the original color, I am a wimp. My hairdresser will need to get 10 new customers to cover college tuition for her kids if I stop. Several years ago I went from dark brown to light blonde, just to see. No one knew me. I even returned to my prior workplace, walked through, said some hello's etc, they did not know it was me! It was fun in a way and I may just do that again...or not. Thanks for the information on products. It is always good to know what is available.

  5. Thank you so much for your comment Celkalee. Many of my old friends thought I had bleached my hair blonde at first they didn't believe it could be that color. That is so funny that you had the same experience!!

  6. Hi Cindy, I'm just now getting a little gray..but weaving in blond makes the gray look blond!

  8. Thank you Cindy.
I havé below bra strap length and so go short often, it grows so fast.... I colour my roots with simmi colour not to harm my hair, I can still hot iron it without damage to it much, I have very wavy hair and harsh colour treatments I fear, if I cut it shoulder length and let it grow out I know I would hate to see that 1-2-3-4 inch grow out.... I had been thinking of having a colorist just go for it with that young trendy blonde that looks silver grey, then grow out would be a little easier.

As for beautiful greys, I have a friend with the most beautiful grey shoulder length grey healthy looking hair, and she just uses a bar of soap for full body fave and hair from the health food store and she glows, low matinence hair that she puts in a pony tail at the back of her nap of neck and cuts the bottom off, it's such a fabulous look I envy that natural look.

My daughter does not want me to go grey, she is to use to her French Mom and her dark hair.... But soon I will join that j.Jill super grey trendy look!

You wear your look beautifully, and dress the part.

    Thanks for the tips.

  11. Great article, Cindy!
I went natural for 6 years. Almost white except for the back "underneath"which is very brunette. I had my stylist add some low lights to match the back recently. I also am wearing it just above the chin for a natural face lift illusion.

  13. My daughter is a stylist in San Diego and highly recommends the Davines product. From Italy, everything in the line comes with the most fabulous scent. I am using their purple shampoo right now and cannot say enough good things about the Absolute Beautifying Potion with Royccu oil. Just a drop or two before styling and your hair is silken. One little bottle lasts forever.

  15. My very dark hair began to turn grey in my 20's. It appeared in chunks and looked as if it were "Frosted". By my mid 40's I was almost totally silver and it became my signature look. Rarely does a week go by when I don't get at least one compliment or comment on my hair. I feel that paying attention to the cut is the most important aspect of going gray. Take the money you would be spending with your colorist and get the very best haircut possible.

  18. Cindy,
What a great post. I am a redhead and for some reason I lucked out so far and don't have to color my hair...that said, I'm pretty sure God offset that benefit with more than my fair share of wrinkles! :-) Mr. B. had a beautiful head of white hair and he's always looking for some good shampoos/conditioners for it. I'll forward this along to him.
    xo,
    Karen
P.S. I didn't realize from looking at your picture that your hair was gray, I thought it was blonde...you look very youthful!

  22. You are never "too young" to embrace natural grey in my opinion.

  23. Been "going" gray since I was in my twenties but hiding it is tiring when the "skunk stripe" comes in after coloring every 3 weeks. I decided to embrace my gray and I am loving it! I am still in transition, but at least I no longer have to worry about the stripe as it's now a thing of the past and my hair just keeps getting more silver as I go. I should have done it sooner, but as a very young looking 55 everyone told me I was too young to go gray - I'm glad I finally listened to my family and just did it!

  24. I've been planning going gray naturally. For now mine is still mostly dark brown with a few grays in the middle. I think they are beautiful and add character. Well I don't know about cutting it shorter even when it's mostly or all gray. I need length for my natural waves to complete and to keep my hair out of my face. Thanks. When I get there I know to switch up the products I use a little. Already use moisturizing and frizz control since curly/wavy hair is drier by nature. Just have to add whitening products.

  27. Love my silver hair, best ever decision to stop colouring after my husband encouraged me to stay natural. Never have looked back and like to keep it shoulder length.
