I love it when kitchen islands are not “matchy matchy” with the kitchen cabinets and stand on their own. If they are constructed of something unexpected, or were something else in their former life in my book they are all that more interesting.
This one complements the cabinetry and ceiling but has the beautiful “sawbuck” detail on the ends

This one is the only rustic/organic piece in this otherwise sea of white kitchen by Phoebe Howard. I don’t think this kitchen would be nearly as interesting without this island. What do you think?

In this kitchen by the fabulous Kelly Harmon the island is made of reclaimed wood

This clever island appears to have been a console table in it’s former life. A prep sink was added for convenience.
This island looks like it may have been a shop counter of some sort . I am crazy about this one.

Another example here of a repurposed antique piece used as the island in Donna Gray’s kitchen.
This fabulous island, constructed of reclaimed wood, looks wonderful in this industrial setting.

What is your idea of the perfect kitchen island? Do you prefer one that matches the rest of the cabinetry or one that stands on it’s own and makes a statement? I would love to hear what you think.
Love all of the kitchens, but the first one is amazing. So warm and full of character!
ReplyDeleteThese are all A.MAZ.ING! I've been looking for an old table for my island but you've shown a few that has me thinking about going i another direction. A table would take up less visual space, something like a store counter would provide more storage. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteI think I would like a standout island. One that makes a statement and is totally utilitarian. Yeh, that's what I would like. All shown are beautiful and I inspirational.......

Hi Cindy. I love a kitchen island that is a piece in itself.
ReplyDeleteLove the one above that looks like it had been a console!

I'm seeing more and more reclaimed wood in kitchens and love it. kelly harmon and Donna did a beautiful job. White is always a classic but adding the warmth of wood really changes things up. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat examples. I love Donna Gray's kitchen and everything in it, especially the wire storage unit.
ReplyDeleteI so agree! Love the examples you show. My daydream island would be an old rustic table with a marble top... great for baking.... not that i bake!
ReplyDeleteI love all of these...very fab!
ReplyDeleteSo many great ideas! I love them all.
ReplyDeleteCindy, I'm loving all these islands. I totally agree that a more rustic or unmatched island gives the kitchen a little soul. All of these make me want to bake something and hang out there! I think my favorite is the shop counter as well!
ReplyDeleteJust catching up on your blog! I've missed it!
