Guest Bedroom Update…

As I have told you all many times before most of the rooms in our  home are sadly in need of updating.  You know the old saying the cobblers son  goes without shoes….need I say more?  All of our bedrooms are upstairs and the hardwood floors are in need of refinishing.  When we decided to paint two of the guest bedrooms my husband decided to hand scrape the floors while the room was empty and stain and refinish them as well.  One bedroom at a time to make it less painless!  I did a post on Twin Beds recently.  This small update is  what sparked the post  The first room (seen below) was originally my son’s room (now 32).  For some reason when he left for college I got the big idea to glaze the walls this horrible color.  I can’t believe I am even sharing this!! What is even worse, how long I left it like this!! At any rate it is amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do!!

We have collected American Antiques for over forty years. My husband is a total purist and would be delighted with pictures of ancestors that aren’t ours on the walls.  I on the other hand have to exercise a bit of coaxing to prevent our home from looking  museum like.

The wall color is Halo by Benjamin Moore.  The slipcover fabricated by Katie Baker Slipcovers is made from a sheet from Pom Pom at Home. Vintage rug pillow and rug purchased in Santa Fe over 30 years ago.

The twin beds were previously located in the other guestroom that is glazed another horrible color.  I wanted to move them into my son’s old room because of the gray beams that are incidentally old telephone poles.  Ick!! This room is currently being updated as well!

Here is the room now.  The painting above the chest is a copy done by a dear friend who is now 90 mimicking Edward Hicks Peaceable Kingdom over forty years ago.  The Suzani’s are vintage and purchased on Ebay several years ago.

This sign was purchased over 25 years ago in Maine on a buying trip and is one of my favorites. The rug is from Shine Rugs.

The quilts are from West Elm and the dark shams are from Pottery Barn here http://www.potterybarn.com/products/valerie-floral-metalasse-duvet-cover-sham/?pkey=cduvet-covers-shams&group=1&sku=221655.  The small boudoir pillows are fabricated  from an old French remnant from Wendy Lewis here http://www.ebay.com/itm/33-inch-76-inch-panel-Antique-French-red-black-floral-fabric-panel-two-/110649692998?hash=item19c33c5346.  Wendy always has an amazing selection of vintage and antique textiles. I love using vintage objects and textiles in my designs.

The floors are stained dark  walnut

I absolutely love the color but have a feeling this little guy’s hair is going to drive me crazy!

There is still work to do.  I am debating whether to purchase  a pair of arched shutters for the headboards or to just use a pair of mirrors fashioned from antique baseboards. Paint is the simplest and cheapest update you can make in a room and get the most bang for the buck! You don't have to completely redo a room to give it an updated look.  Shop your own home and use the things you love...and it helps to have a handy and talented husband!

  1. The bedrooms are beautiful! Amazing what painting a room can do. And the floors look wonderful. The fabric for the slipcovers if lovely and I love the bedskirts!

Here is my philosophy of dog hair: dogs have soooo much love to give that sometimes it just falls off in pieces, so every dog hair you find is a little piece of love left for you. Labs are the best!

  2. Beyond beautiful!
It's great to see someone furnishing their home with stunning antiques.
    Ditto on the handy husband.
    And ditto on dog hair.
We have 2 black dogs (oh, why not?), which means no light-colored fabric in the house!
    TY for sharing.

  3. I rather like the prior color on the walls, but the fresh bright cream is great! Also love seeing the zebra print as I redid an antiwue chair in brown and cream zebra and am looking for ideas on how to combine it. As always your style is wonderful.

  5. Cindy, I debated on Halo, before I settled on Cake Batter by BM....I love it ! It will be a wonderful back drop for anything you choose to put with it...decorating in bits and pieces is very satisfying.....the end results always more rewarding !! N.xo

  8. Cindy I'm in the same boat as you, sadly I have left our home for eighteen years and it needs updating badly! It has all come down to time but we've started redecorating thankfully. We have dark walnut floors and a white/gold dog with long hair, not bad but you do need to vacuum a little more often. Thank God for swifter. Your updates look wonderful and here's to lightening up!

  10. That looks great...very handsome. What a wonderful mix of things! The lighter walls really makes everything sing.

I've purchased several things from Wendy Lewis and she's a gem. She's always so excited by every purchase, every project I'm working on her enthusiasm just jumps through the computer screen. I almost feel like she's a friend.
